Masking of the glazing from the outside and two sets of national insignia for the Vickers Wellington IC night bomber, 1:48 scale. The dimensions are taken from the Trumpeter kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Vickers Wellington rested on a lattice structure of light sections woven into a diamond mesh, designed by Barnes Wallis. The covering was fabric, and when the machine took a hit the mesh held on even with a piece missing from it. The IC version carried machine guns in the front and rear turrets and an additional pair in the side windows; it was these machines that flew the main weight of the night raids of the first years of the war.
This is a simple item, and it is worth saying openly where its benefit lies. The cockpit of a large bomber has fairly flat surfaces and an experienced modeler could manage them with a strip of tape. The real saving is elsewhere: in the two gun turrets, where the panes are small and densely packed, and in the two complete sets of national insignia, which make up more of the package than the canopy mask itself.
The glazing is masked from the outside, complemented by two sets of insignia to be sprayed. Bombers tend to have large roundels, and on a fabric covering a crease or a bubble easily appears under a decal, because the surface is not perfectly smooth. Paint applied over a mask knows no such problem and settles into the fabric as well.
Suitable for a modeler who is up for a large fuselage and wants the glazing to come out consistent. Besides the set it is worth getting liquid masking fluid for the small openings in the corners of the turrets, where a flat film will not reach. A second aid that proves itself here is a toothpick cut to a wedge; with it the edge of the film can be pressed into a corner without any risk of scratching.
