These are neither photo-etched parts nor a resin set, but so-called 3D decals. They are colored interior features printed into a three-dimensional relief on a decal backing paper: the instrument panel, the side panels and other cockpit details have a real thickness, so that buttons, levers and instrument bezels stand out above the surface and catch a shadow. The word base in the name denotes the basic option of the set; the manufacturer also lists a more advanced version for the same machine.

Why a 3D decal instead of an etch or painting

A classic etch is flat and the modeler has to apply the color themselves; few people can paint the dials by hand in 1:48 scale without a magnifier. A 3D decal arrives painted and three-dimensional at the same time, so it comes close to the look of a real panel in a single step. It has no adhesive layer of its own, though: the part is cut out of the sheet, left in lukewarm water for about fifteen seconds and then slid off the backing paper into place, where gloss clear coat applied in advance holds it. The result shows above all on an aircraft with a tandem cockpit and a large glazed area, where there is a good view into the interior.

How to use the set

• First degrease the plastic part, sand the raised details down and go over it with gloss clear coat of the Future, Klear or Tamiya X-22 kind.
• Leave the cut-out element in lukewarm water for about fifteen seconds until it comes free on the paper.
• Slide it off the paper with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, without bending the three-dimensional film unnecessarily.
• Line the position up, blot the excess water away and only then press it down with a soft point; on an intricate surface a drop of super glue helps.
• Do not use decal softener or setting solution, as the chemistry would damage the printed resin; and do not apply the clear coat heavily either, as it would fill the relief.
