About product

The aircraft carrier Shinano in 1:700 scale, the version with clear parts

An injection-molded plastic kit in the 1:700 ship scale from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi. The see-through designation in the name refers to a special release in which part of the model is molded in clear plastic, so that you can see inside the hull. It is a variant intended more for examining the structure than for ordinary camouflage painting. Which particular parts are clear and to what extent is not stated here, and neither is the number of parts or the rest of the contents of the package.

The real subject

Shinano came about from the third Yamato class hull on the slipway, which was reworked into an aircraft carrier during construction. Thanks to that she had exceptionally robust armor protection derived from a battleship, and at the time of her completion she was the largest aircraft carrier in the world. She was commissioned at the very end of 1944 and lost only a few days later while moving between Japanese ports, before she managed to reach full combat readiness. The combination of gigantic dimensions and a very short service life makes her one of the most distinctive ship subjects.

Building and painting tips

With a version that has clear parts the procedure is the opposite of usual. First protect the clear parts from scratching, leave them in their bag until the last moment and never sand them dry. Glue them with cyanoacrylate glue intended for clear plastic or with a special glue for glazing; ordinary thin cement for plastic would fog them. Finish and paint the inner structure that is meant to be visible before you close up the hull. Spray the outer opaque areas with an airbrush and mask the clear sections carefully. Set the flight deck apart from the steel areas and even the whole thing out with a light wash.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of Japanese aircraft carriers in 1:700 scale.
  • For modelers who want to show the internal arrangement of the hull.
  • For builders of special and limited releases.
  • For more advanced modelers who can work with clear parts.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a special release in which part of the model is molded in clear plastic, so that you can see inside the hull. Which particular parts those are is not stated here.

Ordinary thin cement for plastic will fog clear material. Use cyanoacrylate glue intended for clear plastic or a special glue for glazing, and protect the parts from scratching.

She came about by converting the third Yamato class hull on the slipway into an aircraft carrier, thanks to which she had armor protection derived from a battleship.

Rather not. Working with clear parts calls for care in gluing, masking and painting, so we recommend the model rather to more advanced builders.
