About product

Aircraft carrier USS Saratoga CV-3 1:700 (Tamiya, Waterline)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the American aircraft carrier USS Saratoga (CV-3) in 1:700 scale from Tamiya, from the Waterline Series. The model has the hull at waterline level, a long flight deck, a massive island with a large funnel and anti-aircraft armament. A name plate is enclosed for display.

The real subject

USS Saratoga belonged to the Lexington class and came about through the conversion of an uncompleted battlecruiser hull into an aircraft carrier. She was one of the first large American aircraft carriers and served to develop carrier aviation between the wars. In the Second World War she operated in the Pacific, survived several instances of damage and came through the war. She ended her career in 1946 at the American nuclear test at Bikini Atoll.

Building and painting tips

Join the hull to the deck carefully and distinguish the wooden deck from the steel surfaces. Lay down the basic shades with an airbrush, and a fine wash will pick out the details. Clean up the characteristic large funnel and the island, and the railings and radars can be refined with a photo-etched set (not included in the package). The model can be displayed on a stand or in a diorama.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in the US Navy of the first half of the 20th century
  • Collectors of aircraft carriers in 1:700 scale
  • Modelers of the Waterline Series
  • Lovers of early carriers

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
