The Artwox Model 1:700 wooden deck for the heavy cruiser USS Astoria CA-34 is an accessory to the Trumpeter 05743 plastic kit. A cut veneer with a self-adhesive back will replace an engraved plastic deck.

This item is not a kit but an accessory to one. Artwox Model cuts the deck parts from thin wooden veneer with the laying of the planks marked on it and with an adhesive layer on the back. Once it is glued on, engraved plastic planks are replaced by real wood, which even in 1:700 scale holds the fine pattern of the grain. The target kit is the Trumpeter 05743; the shapes of the decks differ between individual releases of the same ship, so the set is not universal.
The USS Astoria was a heavy cruiser of the New Orleans class with main armament of nine 203 mm guns in three triple turrets. The ships of this class came about still in the interwar period under the limits of the naval treaties, which showed in the arrangement of the armor and in the relatively compact hull. The Astoria was lost in August 1942 in the night Battle of Savo Island in the Solomon Islands, that is in the early period of the fighting for Guadalcanal.
A self-adhesive surface forgives little, so work with tweezers and a flat spatula, not with your fingers. Smaller parts can, once the film is off, be laid down by one end first, aligned by the edge of the deck and only then pressed home; once the veneer has stuck over its whole area, removing it usually damages it. Always push air bubbles out from the center. On large areas it helps to run the edge of a finger over the surface through a piece of soft cloth, as the pressure is spread evenly and the wood is not dented.
