About product

Artwox Model 1:700 USS Missouri BB-63 — a wooden deck

This is not a model of the ship but an accessory to a plastic kit. The package holds a thin wooden veneer cut to the shape of the deck areas of an American battleship in 1:700 scale, with the printed laying of the planks and with a self-adhesive layer on the back. On the ships of the Iowa class the wooden decking is a characteristic element that takes up almost the whole forward and after deck, so its execution decides the final impression of a model more than any other detail. The set is intended for the Tamiya 31613 kit.

The real subject

The USS Missouri was the third battleship of the American Iowa class and entered service in 1944. The class is characterized by an elongated slender hull designed for high speed, main armament of 406 mm guns in three triple turrets and extensive anti-aircraft armament. The Missouri is best known as the place where the Japanese surrender was signed in Tokyo Bay in September 1945. The ship was later reactivated repeatedly and today serves as a museum vessel, so her wooden decks are well documented and modelers like to work them up in detail.

Gluing and painting tips

The real decks of the ships of this class were laid from teak, whose color ranges from a light grayish to a warmer honey tone according to how far it has weathered and been maintained. So tune the shade of the veneer according to the period you want to show: a freshly maintained deck is warmer, one long exposed rather bleached toward gray. Before gluing, sand, fill and degrease the area with alcohol. Uncover the film on the back in sections, align the part by the axis and press it down with a soft cloth from the center. Trim the overlaps around the turrets and the barbettes with a new blade guided flat. A dark wash will bring out the gaps, and sealing with a matte varnish protects the wood against wear.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of American battleships in 1:700 scale
  • Builders who want to capture the extensive wooden decks of the Iowa class faithfully
  • Collectors of display models looked at mainly from above
  • Modelers willing to spend time on settling and trimming the parts precisely

This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It depends on the period. A maintained teak deck is warmer and honey-colored, one long exposed to the weather rather bleached toward gray. The veneer has a shade of its own that only needs shifting with a thin glaze.

It is not. It is a wooden deck, that is an accessory glued onto the deck of a plastic kit in 1:700 scale. The kit is not included in the package.

Yes, as long as you seal it at the end with a matte or satin varnish. Unvarnished wood is more sensitive to damp and to wear from fingers.
