This is not a kit but an accessory to a model of a ship in 1:700 scale. In the package there is a veneer deck with a self-adhesive base and with the printed laying of the planks, which is glued straight onto the plastic deck of a kit. The model thus gains a real wooden structure and coloring. The set is designed for the Trumpeter 05746 kit.
The USS San Francisco was an American heavy cruiser of the New Orleans class, taken into service in the middle of the 1930s. The main armament consisted of nine 203 mm guns in three triple turrets. The designation of the year in the name of the set refers to the particular state of the ship shown, which differs from the later and the earlier forms in the arrangement of the superstructures and the light armament.
The veneer comes in the shade the manufacturer chose, but you do not have to stay with it. American decks are often toned on a model toward a cooler grayish tone: a very thinned wood stain or an oil paint rubbed out almost dry is enough, applied only after gluing and thorough curing. Work in thin coats and always try the shade on an offcut, because thin veneer soaks up quickly and a darker tone cannot be taken back. Use water-thinned products sparingly, so that the veneer does not ripple.
