About product

Armored train of the 27th Division of armored trains 1:72, UM

A kit of railway fighting vehicles in 1:72 scale from the Ukrainian maker UM (UM Military Technics). The model is supplied as injection-molded plastic with a decal sheet and instructions; it is a multi-part train rather than a single vehicle, so count on a longer build and on matching space in a display case.

The real subject

The OB-3 type was a Soviet armored train of the Second World War, built to a simplified design repeated in series. The train consisted of an armored steam locomotive with a tender, armored gun cars with rotating turrets and covering flatcars that protected the train against mines on the line and carried anti-aircraft armament. Armored trains served to defend railway junctions, to give fire support and to escort transports. Their strength was concentrated firepower and rapid movement along the line, while their weakness was complete dependence on the rail network and how easily aircraft could put them out of action. This release is tied to the 27th Division of armored trains, a unit formed at the turn of 1941 and 1942, whose two OB-3 type trains carried names of their own. The decals in the set make it possible to build the model in their markings.

Building and painting tips

Railway vehicles live and die by the accuracy of the subassemblies, so work in whole units (running gear, car bodies, turrets, superstructures) and try every part dry before you reach for the cement. Build the whole train and let it dry on a flat surface, so that all the wheels sit in one plane. Start the painting with a base coat, then the unifying green shade of Soviet vehicles, or a winter white finish, which was applied in haste and washably at the factory and therefore takes uneven work. Do the weathering with a dark wash into the rivets and pressed recesses, with dust pigments on the running gear and the undersides of the cars and with fine rust on the buffers, the couplings and the footboards. Pull out the metallic shine of worn edges with graphite or a metallic paint.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of Soviet vehicles of the Second World War in 1:72 scale
  • For modelers who enjoy railway vehicles and unusual subjects outside the usual tanks
  • For diorama builders, because an armored train is a rewarding basis for a scene with a station or an embankment
  • For more experienced modelers, because the small parts of the running gear call for patience and clean preparation

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

1:72 is a modeling scale, not a railway one, and the track gauge does not match it exactly. The model is intended as a display piece or for a diorama rather than for running on a layout.

The contents of the package differ between releases and are not stated here. If you want to put the model on a line, count on obtaining or building the track separately.

Rather not. The train has many small parts for the running gear and the superstructures, and the reward for careful preparation is an accurate shape. At least one built vehicle kit behind you comes in handy.

The release is tied to two named trains of the unit. The exact extent of the decal sheet may differ between production runs and is not stated here.
