This kit belongs to the Avrocar Racer X series from the FLY brand, in which the shape of the experimental disc airplane is treated as a racing machine. The individual boxes differ by an additional variant designation in the name; this one carries the designation Zodiaco. The model is intended to be glued and sprayed. The contents of the package, the number of parts and the schemes offered are stated on the packaging of the kit.
The starting point for the shape is the Avro Canada VZ-9 Avrocar, an experimental airplane of disc plan form from the turn of the 1950s and 1960s. In the middle of the disc a large rotor was mounted, driven by three small jet engines; the air left through peripheral slots and the machine was to take off and land vertically. The trials showed that the machine held its stability only in close proximity to the ground, and the project was stopped at the prototype stage. Its unusual shape has, however, made it a popular subject for free modeling treatments.
The main work is the peripheral joint between the upper and lower parts of the disc. Dry-fit the parts before gluing, glue the joint section by section with thin cement for plastic and fill the gaps with putty. Work the sanding from coarser grit toward fine and finally polish the area; on a large smooth surface every irregularity shows. A primer under the paint is practically essential here, because it reveals any scratches left. Spray the gloss racing finish in thin coats, let the paint dry properly between them and lay down a gloss varnish under the decals.
