The Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3 is an early production version of this fighter family with the Daimler-Benz DB 601 inverted V12 engine and direct fuel injection. It is characterized by its slender all-metal airframe, framed canopy, squared-off wingtips and narrow-track landing gear, which proved delicate in ground handling. The E-3 version was among the most widespread forms of the type around the turn of the thirties and forties and became the starting point for the further steps of its development.
The parts of the landing gear, the propeller and the radiators are small in this scale; cut them away with a sharp scalpel and clean them up only just before gluing. Dry-fit the fuselage halves, fill the seams with putty and sand them down. Mask the cockpit and apply a filling base coat, which will unify the ground for the light shades. Striking markings need a good gloss clear under the decals, otherwise silvered edges will appear. Once the decals have dried, unify the surface with matte clear and keep any weathering within reasonable limits, so that the effect of the markings is not lost.
