About product

Bf 109G-3 High Altitude Gustav 1:72, AZ model

A kit of the single-seat Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter aircraft in the G-3 version in 1:72 scale. The basis is injection-molded plastic supplemented by clear glazing parts and a small resin part; the package includes decals with several marking options and a color instruction sheet. The publisher is AZ model, a Czech maker of short-run aircraft kits. A short run means softer molds and fewer locating pins, so the model assumes a certain amount of experience on the builder's part.

The real subject

The Bf 109G-3 was the pressurized version of the G series, that is the variant intended for flight at high altitude, where an unprotected cabin would exhaust the crew. Technically it corresponded to the G-4 version, with which it shared its equipment including the radio set, and differed precisely in the pressurized cabin. It was a very small run: production took place at the beginning of 1943 and around fifty examples were built in total, which makes the G-3 one of the least numerous versions of the whole series. Power came from a liquid-cooled engine of the DB 605 series, as on the other variants of the Gustav.

Building and painting tips

Before gluing, check the mating surfaces and sand them dry; with short-run plastic it pays to try every part dry first. Glue with liquid cement for plastic, which wicks into the seam, use as little putty as possible and rather apply it repeatedly. Wash the mold release agent off the resin part, cut the casting block away and glue it with cyanoacrylate glue. Mask the clear parts before spraying and glue them with a glue that does not cloud. Even the surface out with primer so that the engraved panel lines stand out, and then accentuate them with a thin wash. Apply the decals onto a glossy clear coat and go over it with a matte one once it has dried.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Bf 109 versions whose line lacks the rare pressurized G-3
  • Modelers with experience of short-run kits
  • Builders in 1:72 scale who want a less usual type for the display case
  • Anyone interested in the technique of flight at high altitude

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It had a pressurized cabin for flight at high altitude. In its equipment, including the radio set, it corresponded to the G-4 version.

Approximately fifty, and production took place at the beginning of 1943. It is therefore among the least numerous versions of the series.

Rather not. It is a short-run model, where the parts have to be tried dry, sanded down and filled. For a first model we recommend a simpler kit.

They are not. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, and the paints and glue have to be bought separately.
