Nose art for the B-17G Flying Fortress in 1:72 scale. It offers the machine Ack Ack Annie of the 91st Bombardment Group and one surviving museum aircraft.
Responsibility details are not available.
The artwork on the fuselages of American bombers was not a whim of the crews but a way of claiming as their own a machine they flew into places with a high mortality rate. A name written under the cockpit turned a serial number into a particular aircraft, and it often outlived the crew that thought it up. This sheet concentrates on exactly that.
The first is the B-17G with the number 42-32095 and the name Ack Ack Annie, assigned to the 322nd Bomb Squadron of the 91st Bombardment Group. The 91st was among the best known units of the Eighth Air Force, operated from Bassingbourn in England and paid for it with some of the heaviest losses of the whole formation. The second subject is the surviving machine with the number 44-6393, which today stands in a museum collection in California.
In 1:72 scale the carrier film is fairly thick in proportion to the model, so the trimming decides the result more than it does in larger scales. Run a sharp scalpel tight around the artwork and leave no needless margin around it, because it is precisely a margin that creates a visible outline once dry. Lay the motif on a glossy surface and let it settle without pressure. Once it is completely dry it is advisable to varnish the area so that the edges disappear, and only then move on to emphasizing the joints or dirtying the surface.
A printed sheet of markings. A kit of the bomber is sold separately and the sheet is not tied to it in any way, so you can choose a model by any manufacturer that offers the scale.
