A plastic kit of one of the most remarkable aircraft of the interwar era from the Avis brand, which specializes in seldom covered subjects. This short-run kit in 1:72 scale captures a British racing special with an unmistakable barrel-shaped fuselage, a machine that in its day pushed the limits of aerodynamic experiment.
The Bristol Racer came about at the start of the 1920s as an attempt at an aerodynamically immaculate racing monoplane. The designers squeezed a Bristol Jupiter radial engine into an extremely short and wide fuselage whose outline ran smoothly into a massive propeller spinner. The retractable landing gear, a very bold solution for its day, also contributed to the cleanness of the shapes. Testing, however, revealed a whole range of troubles with handling and with cooling, and the project stayed at the prototype stage, which is exactly why this machine is a rewarding subject today for collectors of aviation curiosities.
With a short-run kit, give time to the preparation: dry-fit the parts, sand the mating surfaces lightly and secure the joints with thin cement. The round shapes of the fuselage invite gaps, so fill and sand step by step in thin layers. The single-color surfaces of interwar machines come out best when sprayed with an airbrush in several fine coats; a fine wash into the panel lines and the seams of the cowling will help the detail.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
