1:72 C-47A Skytrain

Techmod 1:72 decals — C-47A Skytrain

A sheet of waterslide decals from the Polish manufacturer Techmod in 1:72 with the markings of the military transport aircraft Douglas C-47A Skytrain. The set serves as a replacement for, or an addition to, the decals from the box with a kit, and thanks to a thin carrier film it settles well even on the smooth areas of the fuselage. In the package there are decals only; the model and paints are not part of it.

The real subject

The C-47 came about as a military derivative of the Douglas DC-3 transport aircraft. It was given a strengthened floor, large cargo doors and an altered interior, so it could carry freight, the wounded and paratroopers and serve as a tug for gliders. The C-47A version differed from the basic form mainly in its electrical system. The aircraft proved exceptionally reliable and tough, and after the war hundreds of machines went back to civil service, so it could be met in various forms all over the world for long decades more.

Use and tips

Before applying the decals, clear-coat the area with a gloss coat; on the large smooth areas of the fuselage a matte surface would cause visible silvering. Cut the motifs off one at a time, soak them briefly and move them into place with a brush. Apply the long lettering along the fuselage onto plenty of water, so that it can still be lined up by the engraved lines. A softener will help the film embrace the riveting and the transitions by the doors. Finally even the surface out with a matte or semi-matte coat according to what finish the model carries.
