1:72 F-14A Tomcat VF-41 Black Aces EXPERT kabuki masks

The 1:72 F-14A Tomcat VF-41 Black Aces EXPERT masking set from New Ware

This is not a model of the aircraft, but a self-adhesive masking set from kabuki tape for a model of the F-14A Tomcat in 1:72 scale, tied to the markings of the squadron VF-41 Black Aces. The designation EXPERT is the highest of the grades offered by this brand; a higher grade corresponds to a wider extent of masking than the BASIC and ADVANCED levels.

Sprayed markings instead of a decal

Masked markings have two advantages over a decal: they have no carrier film that would shine on a matte clear coat, and there is no risk of silvering or of rippling over rivets and engraved lines. The price for that is greater care — the paint has to be applied in thin coats and the individual elements have to be placed exactly, because unlike a decal they cannot be shifted once laid on. Before the spraying itself, therefore, check the position of the masks dry and note down reference points against the panel lines.

Usage tips

The base has to be smooth, fully cured and degreased; on rough or fresh paint the tape will not hold. Press the mask down with a soft stick and go over the edge once more, so that it is sealed. Direct the first pass at a right angle from above, not at an angle under the edge, and spray with a mist rather than a wet coat. Once the masks are off, let the area rest and only then unify the surface with a clear coat. Put any small nicks in the paint right with a fine brush, not by masking the same place again.

Who the set is for

• modelers who want to spray the markings instead of using decals
• builders of the Tomcat in 1:72 scale with an interest in a particular squadron
• advanced modelers used to working with an airbrush
• anyone interested in the highest grade of this brand's masking sets

The set holds only the masks. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
