An injection-molded plastic kit of the F-4EJ fighter in 1:72 from the Japanese brand FineMolds. The manufacturer has long been known for accurate fit and fine engraving of surface detail, which on a twin-engine aircraft of this size shows mainly on the fuselage panels and the air intakes. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The number of parts and the decal schemes on offer are given on the packaging of the kit and in the enclosed instructions.
The F-4EJ is the Japanese version of the two-seat twin-engine McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II, derived from the F-4E variant. It was created for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force and, with the exception of the first machines, it was built under license in Japan itself. Compared with the baseline variant it was adapted to the operator's requirements: the equipment was aimed at air defense duties and some of the equipment intended for attacks on ground targets and for long-range transfers was left out. The aircraft was powered by a pair of jet engines with afterburners, and the design comes from a type that was built in large numbers for a range of users.
Start with the cockpit: the interior and the seats are very hard to touch up once the fuselage is closed. The long engine intake ducts are best painted and masked before the fuselage halves are glued together. Glue with thin cement for plastic, which is drawn into the joint by capillary action and does not run out onto the surface. Apply an undercoat before painting, otherwise every unpolished joint will show on the smooth plastic. Mask the cockpit and the lights, apply the decals onto gloss varnish and fix them with a softener so that they settle into the engraved lines. Bring the panel lines out with a thin wash only after the varnish has dried.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
