An injection-molded plastic kit of the F-4EJ Kai fighter in 1:72 from the Japanese brand FineMolds. It is the upgraded form of the Japanese Phantom, which differs from the baseline version above all in equipment, and the shapes of some parts match that. The manufacturer is known for accurate fit and fine surface engraving. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The number of parts and the decal schemes on offer are given on the packaging of the kit and in the enclosed instructions.
The Kai designation belongs to the upgraded form of the Japanese version of the F-4 Phantom II. The upgrade concentrated on the avionics: the aircraft received a new airborne radar and modified cockpit equipment, which widened the range of duties it could carry out, including use against surface targets. In design terms it is still a two-seat twin-engine aircraft with the characteristically cranked outer wing panels and the drooping tail surfaces. In Japanese service it stayed in the inventory considerably longer than with most other users of the type.
Start with the cockpit and the seats; once the fuselage is closed you can no longer reach them. Paint and mask the engine intake ducts before the fuselage is glued together. Use thin cement for plastic, which is drawn into the joint by capillary action. Apply an undercoat before painting and check the filled joints along the spine of the fuselage. Apply the decals onto gloss varnish and fix them with a softener so that they settle into the engraved lines. Bring the panel lines out with a thin wash onto dried varnish, and at the end even the surface out with a matte or semi-matte varnish according to the scheme chosen.
