A resin detail accessory in 1:72 scale from the Czech maker Brengun. It is not a model of an aircraft, but a jettisonable drop tank intended for a model of the Grumman F6F Hellcat carrier fighter. Compared with the part from an ordinary kit, the cast tank has a cleaner shape and, above all, no parting seam along the whole side, which would have to be laboriously sanded and polished smooth. The capacity of the tank and the number of parts in the package are given on the packaging.
The Grumman F6F Hellcat was a carrier fighter of the US Navy deployed in the Pacific in the second half of the Second World War. It was a sturdy single-engine all-metal machine with a radial engine, folding wings and a large fuel supply. Range was crucial in that theater, which is why a jettisonable tank was commonly hung under the fuselage and dropped by the pilot when combat began. The tanks came in several releases and their surface finish differed; some stayed unpainted, others were painted in the shade of the aircraft's lower surface.
First wash the parts in lukewarm water with dish soap, so that they are rid of mold release agent. Cut the casting block off with a saw, not with nippers - with aerodynamic shapes a break easily tears a piece of the wall away. Level the surface after the cut by sanding wet with gradually finer grits and polish it, because the tank is a smooth, glossy and clearly visible part on which every groove will show. It is attached with cyanoacrylate glue. It pays to paint it separately and hang it on only to a finished model; the store is then not in the way while the lower surface is painted and no difference in color arises in the shadow of the store.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
