A turned barrel for the 85 mm D-5T gun for a model of the IS-1 heavy tank in 1:72 scale. Drawn for the PST kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The IS-1, also designated IS-85, was a Soviet heavy tank of the Second World War. Its main weapon was an 85 mm D-5T gun in the turret. The barrel is the most conspicuous shape on a tank model: it is long, it stands out from the outline and the eye tells at once whether it is really straight and round.
A turned replacement barrel for the 85 mm D-5T gun for a model of the IS-1 in 1:72 scale. The part is drawn for the PST kit. The scope of delivery and whether any other parts belong with the barrel are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
A turned part has an exactly circular section compared with a plastic one and has no lengthwise joint, so gluing two halves together and sanding the seam, during which a barrel is easily slimmed into an oval, is no longer necessary. Before gluing, test the seating dry and check that the barrel points along the axis of the turret; a deviation is conspicuous seen from above. The part is not polystyrene, so polystyrene cement has no effect on it; it is glued with cyanoacrylate glue. Before painting, wash and degrease it, otherwise the paint will not take hold; on a smooth turned surface it pays to use a base color. Apply the paint in thin layers so that the fine steps on the surface of the barrel are not filled in.
The replacement barrel will be appreciated by modelers who build the IS-1 in 1:72 scale and want the most visible part of the model straight and seamless without having to fine-tune it laboriously.
The kit, paints and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
