The Royal Marines belong to the infantry that moved through the bleak, windy terrain of the South Atlantic in the Falklands War of 1982. The soldiers there covered long stretches on foot, with heavy packs and in constantly wet weather, and it is exactly this character that gives the figures their look: hunched shoulders, full packs and clothing closed against the wind. The number in the name tells the individual items within the line apart, and they can be built into a single scene.
In 1:35 scale an adult figure measures about five centimeters, so the figures fit vehicles, helicopters and terrain dioramas in the same scale. They can be used in a scene of a move, a rest over a map or a muster for a landing. They also work well on their own on a small base, where stony ground, low grass and waterlogged soil will complete the mood.
Cut any excess material away a little distance from the part with a sharp blade, sand the remainder and wash and degrease the surface before painting. Cyanoacrylate glue suits the joining of the parts, as it holds on ordinary modeling materials. Keep the colors muted, that is earthy and olive shades without sharp contrasts, because nothing shines on an open plain. Dirty the trousers and the footwear from the ground upward, go over the kit with a light wash and close the whole with a matte varnish. Paint the face and the hands in thin glazes, so that the sculpted detail stays visible.
The set will appeal to modelers interested in the modern conflicts of the second half of the twentieth century, and to diorama builders looking for figures for British hardware in 1:35 scale. The painting is not demanding on mixing shades, because the scene takes a single muted palette.
