The Type 81 is a Japanese short-range surface-to-air missile system intended to protect units and installations against low-flying targets. The system is conceived as mobile: the individual elements, that is, the launcher as well as the apparatus for searching for targets and controlling fire, are carried on truck chassis, so it can be moved and deployed quickly. It is precisely the pair of vehicles in different roles that is characteristic of this system, and in the model they form its main visual motif.
In 1:72 scale the axles, the missile mountings and the antennas are small: cut the parts off with a sharp knife and sand the pins down before you start gluing, as otherwise the assembly will twist. It is practical to paint the chassis and the cab separately from the body. A two-color camouflage of dark green and brown with sharp transitions is typical of current Japanese ground equipment; it looks best when you spray it with an airbrush over thin strips of masking putty and leave the edges only slightly soft. Dust the running gear and the lower parts with pigment, and leave the upper surfaces clean on the contrary, since equipment in peacetime service tends to be maintained. Accentuate the engraving with a thin paneliner.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
