An injection-molded plastic kit of the American M4A3 Sherman medium tank with HVSS horizontal suspension, in the flamethrower conversion. The model belongs to UM's extensive range of 1:72 armor. The exact make-up of the set, the number of parts and the marking options are given in the instructions and on the box of the kit.
The M4A3 was the Sherman version with a hull welded from rolled armor plate and with the Ford GAA spark-ignition V8. From the autumn of 1944 part of the production replaced the older vertical VVSS suspension with the new HVSS system with horizontal volute springs and wider tracks. The wider track markedly lowered ground pressure and improved behavior in mud and snow, while the deeper travel calmed the ride across country. Vehicles fitted with a flamethrower were built as a specialized conversion for fighting against fortified positions, with the weapon mounted in place of part of the standard armament or alongside it. The external recognition features of HVSS are the paired road wheels and the noticeably wider track.
Finish the running gear and the lower hull before you close the hull up and glue the fenders on - once assembled they are hard to reach. Fit the wheels dry first, check that they lie in one plane and only then fix them with glue. Let the tracks settle so that they sit naturally on the wheels. Lay down a thin primer coat before painting. On the base shade it pays off in a small scale to add light lightening of the upper surfaces, so that the model does not look flat. Build the weathering up in layers: a dark wash into the recesses and around the rivets, then dry-brushing on the edges and finally pigments for mud and dust deposits in the running gear and on the fenders. Finish the exhaust and the flamethrower nozzle in dark shades.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
