An injection-molded plastic kit of the heavy cross-country MAZ-543M truck in 1:72 scale from the PST brand. The model is intended to be assembled and painted by the modeler. The particular number of parts, the contents of the decal sheet and the dimensions of the finished model are given on the box and in the enclosed instructions.
The MAZ-543 is a heavy cross-country truck with drive to all four axles in an 8x8 arrangement, developed at the Minsk automobile factory. It arose as a carrier of very heavy loads and as a universal chassis for large special bodies; it was powered by a twelve-cylinder diesel engine and the individual wheels were independently suspended, which gave the vehicle decent mobility off made roads. The MAZ-543M version differs from the basic form in the arrangement of the cabs: instead of a pair of cabs on either side of the front end it has only one cab on the left, which frees a longer continuous space behind it for a body. It is this form that is the most easily recognized by a modeler.
With this type the center of gravity of the work lies in the chassis: set aside enough time for eight wheels, the suspension and the front steering axles, and align everything dry before you reach for the glue. It is practical to paint the wheels separately and fit them at the end; the tires are easily masked with circular masks or with a template cut from adhesive tape. The extensive flat areas of the cab and the frame will appreciate a thin coat of primer and paint applied with an airbrush in several passes. At the end a restrained accentuation of the panel lines with a wash and a light touch of dust with pigments from the lower parts upward come in useful.
