Techmod 1:72 decals — Mikoyan MiG-23MF

A sheet of waterslide decals from the Polish manufacturer Techmod in 1:72 with the markings of the MiG-23 fighter aircraft in the MF version. The set replaces or completes the decals enclosed with a kit and comes in useful as well when the original decals in the box have yellowed or hardened with age. The package holds the decals only; the model and paints are not part of it.

The real subject

The MiG-23 was a single-engine fighter aircraft with a variable-geometry wing, which was set in flight to several positions. A spread wing improved the qualities during takeoff and landing, a swept one the speed in level flight. The MF version was the export form for allied countries and was among the most widespread variants of the type in Europe. It flew in Poland and in Czechoslovakia among other places, so for modelers in Central Europe it is a close subject. The characteristic marks of the machine are the high-set air intakes on the sides of the fuselage and a folding ventral fin.

Use and tips

Before applying the decals, clear-coat the model with a gloss coat. With a movable wing, think through in advance in what position you will build the model, because the markings on the leading part and on the transition into the fuselage have to be placed with regard to the final configuration. Cut the motifs off one at a time, soak them briefly and move them into place with a brush. Let the softener work on its own; the film will then be drawn to the engraved lines and the panel joints. Finally even the surface out with a semi-matte coat matching the usual look of the aircraft.
