An unassembled plastic kit of the Panther medium tank in the Ausf. D version, in 1:72 scale from Revell production. The small scale means smaller demands on space in the display case and a faster build, but also small parts that are worth cutting off with care. The model is supplied to be glued and painted; paints and glue are not included.
The Panther Ausf. D was the first version of the type to be built in series, deployed from 1943. In design terms it was a vehicle with heavily sloped frontal armor and with a long gun of 7.5 cm caliber with a barrel length of 70 calibers, which had excellent penetrating power at long range. The running gear was made up of large-diameter interleaved road wheels with torsion bar suspension — a layout that gave a smooth ride but complicated maintenance. You can tell the D version by several details that later guises did not have: the cylindrical commander's cupola and the side hatch in the turret are among the most striking. The first machines deployed suffered from failures of the drive train, which were gradually dealt with on later versions.
Start with the running gear and the lower hull — interleaved wheels are considerably easier to paint in 1:72 before fitting than after it. Cut the parts off with a sharp knife and scrape the mold seams first, only then sanding them. Lay down a thin primer before painting. With three-tone camouflage in a small scale, work with thinned paint and low pressure, so that the transitions are not coarser than the scale will bear. Bring out the detail with a dark wash in the recesses and dust the lower hull and the running gear lightly with pigment. Spray gloss varnish under the decals and matte the surface down once it has dried.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
