The Potez 63 family began as a heavy fighter, but its greatest fame was brought by the reconnaissance version with a glazed nose. Over seven hundred examples of it were built and in May 1940 it made up the main strength of French tactical reconnaissance. The glazing, which gave the observer a view in almost every direction, also made it an easy target, and the losses were in proportion. All the same the type went on flying after the armistice as well, with units in the south and in the colonies.
The list begins with two aircraft of a training and observation formation from an airfield near Lyon of March 1940 and goes on with machines of the 2nd and 14th, 36th and 52nd reconnaissance groups. The last of them carries the date April 1941, that is the period after the armistice. The series is closed by an aircraft that ended up at a Spanish airfield and was interned there.
With this type the cockpit decides the result. Before the markings come to it, it pays to paint the frames and polish the glazing, because under a large area of glass every fingerprint shows. Only then are the fuselage numbers and the stripes on the tail settled on a smooth clear coat. One of the numbers given repeats on two different machines of the same group, so go through the choice of variant carefully, so that you are not left with an unused sheet.
