An injection-molded plastic kit of the Mi-8 transport helicopter in rescue service in 1:72 scale from the Russian brand Zvezda. The 1:72 scale is a practical one with helicopters: the model is a reasonable size for a display case but it keeps the shape of the fuselage, the tail boom and the rotor head legible.
The Mi-8 is a twin-engine transport helicopter with a five-blade main rotor and it belongs among the most widespread machines of its category in the world. The combination of a roomy cargo cabin, large side doors and a rugged structure made it a universal working tool, used for carrying people and cargo, for casualty evacuation and for search and rescue. The rescue configuration tends to be the most striking in its finish: strong signal colors and additions such as a search light or a rescue hoist by the door set the machine apart from the ordinary transport versions. The helicopter is still in service in many countries and in a number of modernized forms.
With a helicopter start with the cockpit and the cargo compartment, because once the fuselage is glued you can no longer get to them. The canopy glazing is extensive, so it pays to mask carefully and to glue the front panes only after spraying, ideally with cement for clear parts, which does not fog them. The seams on the fuselage and the tail boom call for filling and sanding, otherwise they will stand out under the glossy signal paint. Attach the rotor blades right at the very end so that they do not break while you handle the model, and when painting remember that a saturated red or orange needs a white or light base, otherwise it will not cover. Apply the decals onto a gloss coat and finally unify the surface with a semi-matte one.
