About product

Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer 1:72 - Valom, Australian registration

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from the Czech maker Valom. Valom specializes in unusual and little-covered subjects and produces them with short-run technology, which shows in the character of the parts: the sprues have larger gates, the parts have no locating pins and the build calls for more dry fitting than a mass-production kit. This boxing is aimed at the civil Australian registration given in the name.

The real subject

The Twin Pioneer is a British twin-engined light transport aircraft with markedly short takeoff and landing. In design it is a high-wing monoplane with wing struts, fixed tailwheel landing gear and a tall, angular fuselage with a large cargo hold. A pair of radial engines is hung on the wing. It was exactly the combination of a large lifting area, flaps and a robust undercarriage that allowed operation from short grass and unpaved strips, where an ordinary airliner would not manage. Besides military service, Twin Pioneers found wide use with civil operators in remote areas, Australia among them.

Building and painting tips

With a short-run kit, patience pays off right at the start. Remove the flash and the remains of the gates with a file before the first trial fit, or the parts will not meet. Dry-fit the fuselage and the wing and check their seating before you reach for glue; the mating surfaces often have to be eased by a tenth of a millimeter. The wing struts and the engine nacelles are the key to the geometry; check the dihedral and the angle of incidence from the front and the rear while the glue is setting. The tall, angular fuselage has extensive cockpit glazing with a clear view inside, so at least basic painting of the interior pays off. A civil scheme means a gloss surface: varnish in thin coats, go over with gloss varnish before the decals and even the surface out according to the subject once it is dry. Spray the white areas over a light base, or the plastic will show through and the paint will go on needlessly thick.

Who the model is for

  • Lovers of civil air transport and of machines for short takeoff and landing.
  • Collectors of British postwar aircraft in 1:72.
  • Modelers with experience of short-run kits.
  • Anyone after a subject they will not easily find among the usual offerings.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The molds are made with simpler technology for a smaller run. The parts tend to have no locating pins, larger gates and a need to ease the mating surfaces. The result is excellent, but the build calls for more dry fitting.

According to the name it is aimed at one particular civil Australian registration. What exactly the package holds is given in the instructions supplied.

Rather not. We recommend having a few mass-production kits behind you, because here the fit has to be eased and the geometry of the wing and the engine nacelles watched.

The contents of the package are given in the instructions supplied. Resin seat sets for this type of aircraft are also made separately.
