About product

Soviet Kremlin stars with a red and white edging 1:72 — mid variant, Armycast

A set of masking stencils in 1:72 scale from Armycast for spraying aircraft markings. Instead of a decal you get a cut film: it is applied to finished paintwork, the star is sprayed in paint over it and the mask is removed. The marking is then part of the paintwork, it has no carrier layer and no visible edge, and it follows the relief of the skin faithfully. The item is an accessory for an aircraft model, not a stand-alone kit.

The marking and the variant

The name joins two things that the manufacturer distinguishes: the drawing of the Kremlin star, which it keeps separate from the ordinary red star, and the double edging made up of a white outline and a red line. The mid variant is a step in a range in which the early, mid and late patterns stand side by side. The division is a convention of the manufacturer, not dating — compare the shape and the size with the documentation for the machine you are building.

Tips for applying and spraying

The order of the steps is the key. The paintwork has to be cured and smooth, the area degreased, the edges of the mask pressed down all the way around. A two-color edging comes about in two phases — the lighter shade, drying, masking over, the darker shade. Thin the paint and spray at right angles in thin coats; a heavy coat forms a ridge on the edge and spraying at an angle drives paint under the film. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, not after several days, and use tweezers with a pull at a sharp angle. A matte varnish at the end unifies the gloss of the whole area.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building Soviet aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • those who want a double edging with no blurred boundary
  • builders replacing unusable decals from a kit
  • modelers used to layered masking with an airbrush

This is a masking accessory, not a model. Paints, glue and a kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A sprayed marking has no carrier film, it does not silver on a matte varnish and it follows rivets and panel lines. It calls for an airbrush and more patience, though.

It is a step in a range in which the manufacturer distinguishes the early, mid and late patterns of the marking. Compare the particular form of the insignia with the documentation for the machine you are building.

Take it off soon after the paint has dried. The longer the film stays on the paintwork, the more likely it is to pull the finish away as it is removed.

No. These are markings in 1:72 scale; compare the size of the star with a drawing of your aircraft, though.
