About product

Soviet red stars with a red and white edging 1:72 — early variant, Armycast

A masking set in 1:72 scale from Armycast intended for spraying aircraft markings with a double edging. The film is applied to finished paintwork, the marking is sprayed in paint over it and the mask is removed — the star thus comes about directly in the paintwork, with no carrier film and no risk of silvering on a matte surface. The item is an accessory for an aircraft model, not a kit.

The marking and the variant

According to the name this is a star with a double outline: a white edging and a red line next to it. It is precisely the two-color edging that makes this type of marking better done with masks than with a decal — the sharp boundary between the two lines is markedly cleaner when sprayed. The qualifier for the early period is the division used by the manufacturer according to the stage in the development of the marking; check the exact dating in the documentation for the machine you are building, because the form differed even within one unit.

Tips for applying and spraying

A two-color marking is sprayed layer by layer: the whole area in the lighter color first, then, once it has dried perfectly, it is masked over and the next shade is applied. Haste does not work here — paint that has not dried flakes off as the mask is removed. The base must be smooth and degreased, and the edges of the film pressed down with a toothpick. Spray at right angles and in thin coats so that the paint does not creep under. Take the mask off shortly after it has dried, with tweezers and at a sharp angle. Unify the whole area at the end with a matte varnish, so that there is no difference in gloss between the paintwork and the marking.

Who the set is for

  • modelers of Soviet aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • those who want a two-color edging sharp and with no carrier film
  • builders replacing aged decals from older kits
  • more advanced modelers used to layered masking

This is a masking accessory, not a model. Paints, glue and a kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

In two steps. The lighter color goes over the whole area first, then, once it has dried, it is masked over and the darker shade is applied. Let the paint really dry between the steps.

A sprayed marking has no carrier film, it follows the relief of the skin and it does not silver. It is more work, but on matte paintwork it looks more faithful.

No, these are markings in 1:72 scale in general. Compare the size of the star with a drawing or a photograph of your machine.

No, reckon with a single use. Once it is removed the film no longer holds its shape or its edges.
