A masking set in 1:72 scale from Armycast intended for spraying aircraft markings. It is not a model and not wet decals — you get cut self-adhesive stencils that are applied to finished paintwork, and the star is sprayed in paint over them. The result is part of the paintwork, so it has no carrier film, does not lighten around the edges and does not shine on a matte surface. The set is an accessory for aircraft models, not a stand-alone kit.
A red star with a narrow light edging is among the most widespread aircraft markings of Soviet machines of the Second World War period. The shade of the edging varied between white and yellowish according to the production batch and the state of the paintwork, which is why the manufacturer gives both possibilities in one name. The qualifier for the mid period is the division used by the manufacturer — always compare the particular dating and shape with a photograph or a drawing of the machine you are building, because within one type the markings differed from one example to another.
A mask holds only on a perfectly smooth and cured base. Let the base coat cure, degrease the area and press the film down all the way around so that the edge does not lift. Apply the paint with an airbrush in several thin coats at right angles to the surface — a heavy coat and spraying at an angle are the most frequent causes of paint running under a mask. On a two-color marking you work layer by layer: the lighter edging first, then it is masked over and the red center is sprayed. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, with tweezers and at a sharp angle, and unify the area with a matte varnish at the end.
