A self-adhesive masking set from SX-Art for the model of the twin-engine Su-57 fighter in 1:72 scale. It does not concern the cockpit glazing but exclusively the engine exhaust nozzles. It is neither a kit nor replacement parts but a sheet of pre-cut masks that separate the shades of the nozzles from the finish of the airframe.
The nozzles of the Su-57 do not have a smooth circular perimeter like older types. The edge of the petals is serrated, made up of a row of alternating points, and it is on this broken border that masking by hand falls apart, because straight tape never follows the shape and paint bleeds under it at every tooth. Add to that the fact that the nozzles are sprayed with metal and heat-discolored shades while the airframe carries a flat finish, and you have a border that cannot be corrected with a brush without it showing. A pre-cut mask holds the shape of the teeth exactly as it is designed. The exact extent of the sheet is not stated here, so check it before you buy.
Finish spraying the nozzles and let the varnish cure thoroughly. Then fit the mask and press the edge down with a blunt stick along the whole broken line, tooth by tooth; patience pays off here more than speed. Spray the airframe color in thin coats at a right angle to the edge, not at an angle into the teeth. Take the mask off carefully and while the varnish is fresh, so that the edge of the metallic finish does not come away with it.
