This item is neither a mask for the cockpit nor an airplane model but a set of masks for the landing gear wheels in 1:72 scale for the Tupolev Tu-128M, known by the reporting name Fiddler. The masks are stuck onto the wheels so as to cover the disc or, conversely, the tire, and the paint is sprayed with an airbrush. Once they come off, a precise circle is left at the transition between the disc and the tire, which can only be achieved by hand with a brush with great difficulty. The Tu-128 had multi-wheel main landing gear, so there are a fair number of wheels on the model and outlining them by hand would take a great deal of time. The exact number of pieces in the set and the material of the masks are stated on the packaging of the set.
The transition between the disc and the tire on a wheel is a perfect circle, and the human hand cannot hold one with a brush. The wavy edge that results lets a model down all the more because the viewer looks at the landing gear close up and from below. A pre-cut circular mask does away with that problem: the edge is mathematically precise and every wheel looks the same. The set is intended for the wheels, so it goes well with the separate masking set for the glazing of the same machine, which the same brand lists under a name of its own.
First spray the wheels in the tire shade, let them dry properly and only then stick the mask on. Rubber surfaces need a longer time to cure, otherwise the paint peels off as the mask comes away. Lay the mask down dry, center it on the disc and press the edge carefully with a wooden point all the way round. Spray the disc color in thin coats and preferably at a right angle, so that it does not get under the edge of the mask. Take the mask off shortly after drying, with an angled pull. At the end, a light dusting of pigment on the tread suits it well and ties the wheel to the landing gear and to the base.
The package holds the masks for the wheels only. The model, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
