A set of die-cut self-adhesive vinyl masks in 1:72 scale for spraying the American aircraft insignia in the form used at the landings in North Africa. The insignia is built up by masking and spraying the individual colors in turn, so that it is created directly in the finish of the model, without a carrier film and without the risk of silvering on a matte surface. The maker offers this marking split into two complementary parts; this is part II.
Operation Torch was the Allied landing in French North Africa in November 1942. For quick recognition the aircraft taking part carried the American insignia, that is a white star in a blue circle, supplemented by a conspicuous yellow outer ring. This transitional form was used only briefly and is tied to that particular operation, so it is among the period-distinctive variants of markings that modelers look for. It appeared on the machines committed to the operation regardless of which Allied service they belonged to.
The model has to be smoothly sprayed, degreased and fully cured before masking. Lift the masks off the sheet with tweezers, lay them in place and press the edges down thoroughly, so that no paint runs under the film. Work in layers from the lighter color to the darker one and let each of them dry properly; apply the paint thinly, because a heavy coat leaves a ridge at the edge. Lift the mask off shortly after it has dried, pulling sideways at an angle. A gloss base limits paint creeping under better than a rough matte surface and makes sharp edges on the finished marking easier.
