An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:20 scale from the Japanese maker Aoshima. The subject is the Honda Life Step Van with the factory code VA as it was in 1974. The larger scale makes sense on a vehicle of the smallest Japanese class: the model is a reasonable size for a display case and at the same time it carries more detail than the usual 1:24. The same version has been released before, so go by the particular vehicle and the model year.
The Life Step Van came about at the start of the 1970s as the commercial variant of the Life model. It combined a small two-cylinder engine mounted at the front with front-wheel drive and an unusually tall body extended to the rear, thanks to which it offered exceptional load space for its size. Its upright, almost box-like shape and low front end made it a design curiosity; today the Step Van is a sought-after classic of the Japanese scene.
In modeling practice 1:20 scale is pleasant precisely because everything is a size larger, but at the same time it gives more away. The edges of the body on an angular vehicle have to stay sharp, so when removing the parting lines you sand along an edge and never across it, preferably with finer paper in several steps. The thin pillars of the large windows are the most vulnerable part of this shape, so handle the body by the floor and not by the roof. The glazing on a van runs practically all the way round, so mask the frames carefully and fit the clear parts only at the end of the build.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
