A relief full-color set from the maker Kits-World for the instrument panel of a Tornado GR.4 kit in 1:32 scale. The displays are printed in the active state, so the model corresponds to an aircraft with powered systems. The three-dimensional layer gives the gauges and the frames of the displays a depth that hand-painting in a large scale catches up with only with difficulty, and the whole panel is finished in the course of one evening.
The Tornado GR.4 is a two-seat strike and reconnaissance aircraft of the Royal Air Force with a variable-geometry wing, which came about through the modernization of an older version. The pilot's front station has a densely occupied instrument panel where classic round instruments and displays stand side by side. With a large model the cockpit is one of the first places a viewer looks at.
The set seats best on a smooth base, so level the raised relief of the original part with a file and abrasive paper. A dark base and a gloss varnish follow. Transfer the relief layer with a small amount of water, draw the excess off and press it on with a cloth. Dose the softener drop by drop; running a brush over it damages the layer and with active displays it can smear the printed symbology. Let the panel cure thoroughly and only then work on with the cockpit. Apply the matte varnish to the surroundings, not to the glasses of the instruments. When you are building a model with an open canopy, consider a darker wash around the panel as well, as it will accentuate the depth of the space behind it.
A variant with inactive displays and further very similar sets also exist for the same aircraft; tell them apart by the exact designation of the variant. This is an accessory for a kit, not a model on its own; a kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
