A large-format printed sheet 225 x 225 mm showing the surface of an airfield used by the Eighth Air Force in England in the years 1942 to 1945. It serves as a base under models in 1:144 scale. It is neither a kit nor a decal.
The airfields of this force came into being in England at wartime speed and their paved areas matched that: they were laid quickly, from whatever material was at hand, and maintained only as far as was necessary. The result was paving with pronounced divisions, with repaired patches in uneven shades and with edges running straight into the grass. That is exactly what defines a period scene: not an evenly gray surface but a surface made up of strips and patches with differing degrees of wear.
The 1:144 scale is practical for this subject, because in it even a four-engine machine can be displayed sensibly. On an area 225 millimeters on a side, count on one piece with a large bomber and on two with a fighter. The scene gains in believability if you add ground vehicles and small accessories in the same scale and if you dirty the underside of the model lightly; mud and dust from the edges of the area belong to wartime airfields as much as the paving itself.
This is a printed base for a model. The model itself, glue and paints are not part of the delivery.
