About product

Display Base for a 1:72 Model, RAF Lakenheath, 1990 to 2021 (Kits-World)

A printed scenic base 450 x 450 mm intended for models in 1:72 scale. It is neither a kit nor a decal. A finished, painted model is stood on it and thereby gains the setting that gives its paint scheme and markings their sense. With modern combat aircraft that has an added value, because it is precisely a large airfield surface that gives a model its scale and shows how large the machine really is.

What the motif captures

The motif is tied to Lakenheath station in England and to the period from 1990 to 2021. According to the name it names the American units that operated here within this span: the 48th Fighter Wing and its 492nd, 493rd and 494th squadrons, plus the 495th squadron with a note about its reactivation in 2021. The base therefore covers three decades of operation and suits American tactical aircraft deployed in Europe from the 1990s onwards.

Wear and the realism of the surface

On large airfield surfaces the most conspicuous element is the network of joints between the individual bays. It is into the joints that operational grime runs, and that is why they tend to be noticeably darker than the surrounding surface. Use the same principle on the model: bring out the panel lines with a flowing shade rather than with overall darkening, so that the model reacts to light much as the base does. The second thing is the stand. Traces of operating fluids collect under an aircraft, so a darker mark under the engine area or under the pylons looks logical. Do not overdo it, though, on a machine that otherwise looks freshly washed.

Who the base is for

  • Builders of modern American combat aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Those interested in Cold War aviation and in modern deployment in Europe
  • Modelers who want a scene without gluing, filling and terrain materials
  • Photographing finished models against a believable background

This is a printed scenic base, not a kit. The model and the accessories are not part of the delivery.

FAQ

American tactical aircraft deployed in Europe from the 1990s to 2021, that is the period the motif is tied to.

In 1:72 scale yes. An area of 450 x 450 mm will suffice even for a larger twin-engine machine, though with less clearance from the edges.

No, it is used straight away. We recommend only matching the amount of dirt on the model to the printed surface, so that the whole looks consistent.
