A printed scenic base 450 x 450 mm for models in 1:72 scale. The motif is tied to Da Nang base and to the period of the years 1970 to 1971. It is not a kit or a decal but a large-format printed sheet on which a finished model is simply placed. Anyone building hardware from Southeast Asia of the turn of the 1960s and 1970s gets a scene matching both place and time without having to deal with building a diorama.
A time frame of two years is narrow, and when choosing that is good news, because the paint scheme of the model can be matched to it exactly. The base suits machines that logically stood at the station in this period. We approach the subject strictly factually: we describe the motif as the surface of the given airfield at the given time, and read nothing more into it.
Stations with very heavy traffic look different from quiet airfields. In the places most often taxied over, the surface is polished smooth, loses its texture and unifies in color into a darker tone, while the edges stay lighter and more varied. In putting a scene together there follows a practical tip for photography: a light surface around a darker taxi lane will easily overexpose the model if you shoot with automatic exposure. It pays to place the model rather on the darker part of the surface or to pull the exposure down slightly, otherwise the base will visually take away the detail you worked so hard to create on the model. The machine itself then suits a lower contrast of weathering, so that it does not look cut out against a polished base.
