Anvil, Rust and Old Gold

In fantasy worlds a dwarf is always bound up with metal. His armor tends to be massive, scratched and marked by work underground, so it is painted differently from the smooth plate of a knight. That is exactly why two metallic shades stand at the head of this selection: old gold and rusty gold. Together the two of them give a foundation for the plating, for the decorative bands and for the blade of an axe, without the result looking like a brand-new toy.

What is inside the box

Alongside the two metals the package holds twelve opaque shades: three yellows, running from a bright one through a rotten tone to a pastel; two flesh colors, one for skin and one with a hint of pink; a brown rose and a saddle brown; two reds, one burnt and one dirtied; a camouflage green; a deep gray; and a dark green-gray. The selection is put together so that it covers the figure from the base to the beard and so that the painter does not have to buy extra shades while working on the very first figure.

How to work with a palette like this

The tried and tested route runs from a dark base through solid coverage with color to lightening the edges. The earthy tones suit skin, leather straps and grips; the green and the grays suit the cloak and the base; the metals come last, because they are easily carried into the surrounding areas. The paints are thinned with water and dry to a matte finish, so where a sheen is wanted it has to be added with a varnish.
