A stand-alone decal sheet from the Hungarian manufacturer HAD models, aimed at the Ukrainian modernized version of the Su-27 interceptor with the designation P1M. It is neither a kit nor an accessory part: the decals are applied to a finished painted model and change its markings. The 1:32 scale means large areas and correspondingly large markings, which makes the application striking but at the same time less forgiving of mistakes.
The Su-27 is a heavy twin-engine fighter with its characteristic blended transition between fuselage and wing and with a pair of vertical tails. The P version was conceived as an interceptor, that is aimed at the defense of airspace, and the modernization designated P1M brought changes to the avionics and the equipment of aircraft in Ukrainian service. For a modeler this is an attractive subject: the aircraft is large, its finishes tend to be broken up and both the national and the serial markings are clearly apparent on the large areas.
With large decals work in sections and do not hurry. The model has to carry a gloss varnish and be perfectly dry. Leave a large decal in the water only briefly and carry it to the spot together with its backing paper, sliding it off only there, otherwise it will wrinkle or fold over on itself. Bring the position right with a soft brush and a little water, then press the water out from underneath, from the center toward the edges. On intricate areas, the transitions of the fuselage and up against engraved lines, apply a decal softener and let it work without interference. Once dry, check the edges, prick any bubbles with the tip of a scalpel and brush the softener over again. Finally give the whole model a varnish, so that the sheen is unified and the edges of the carrier film disappear.
