A decal set from the Hungarian manufacturer HAD models for the A-7E carrier-based attack aircraft. It relates to the machines of the VA-86 squadron, nicknamed the Sidewinders, in the form made famous by the 1980 feature film shot on board an American aircraft carrier. This is stand-alone decal material, not a kit: the decals are applied to a finished painted model and determine its markings and its decoration.
The A-7 Corsair II is a single-engine subsonic carrier-based attack aircraft with a short, stocky fuselage and a large nose air intake below the cockpit. The E version was the most widespread carrier variant of the US Navy and was marked out by a more powerful engine and more modern avionics for the accurate delivery of its weapons. The aircraft was designed to carry a great many external stores on a relatively small machine, which made it a mainstay of the carrier air wings for many years. The markings of aircraft of this era tended to be colorful and bold, with squadron insignia that read well on the vertical tail, and that is exactly what makes models from this period attractive.
Bold colored insignia come into their own only on a perfectly smooth surface, so do not skimp on the preparation: a gloss varnish, enough drying time and, if needed, a light polish. Apply the decals in layers, that is the large areas and the national insignia first, then the serial numbers and the small lettering last. Let each item dry before you start on the one beside it; a wet decal shifts easily. Use the softener deliberately where a decal runs across engraved lines and transitions. Once you have finished, give the whole model a varnish, so that the glossy edges of the carrier film disappear and the colored insignia blend into the surface. On the intricate areas around the tail surfaces it pays to check the edges against the light.
