The templates follow the shapes of a particular kit, so when painting you have nothing to trace or cut out with a scalpel. The set does not take the place of the model in itself; it is an add-on to the build.
The Yak-38 is a single-seat shipboard aircraft with a short takeoff and a vertical landing, made for operating from ships. Its lift engines behind the cockpit, the grilles and doors in the upper part of the fuselage and the swiveling nozzles at the sides are characteristic. The 38M version differs from the basic pattern in details of the airframe and the equipment, so it is worth comparing the assembly instructions before you start masking.
Shipboard machines often have their color boundary laid out differently from land-based aircraft: the pattern on the upper surfaces ends at the edge of the wing and the underside goes over into a light shade along a sharp line on the sides of the fuselage. On the Yak-38 that line is complicated by the intake doors and the outlet openings on the spine, where the pattern has to carry on across steps in the surface. A template helps above all where a surface goes from flat to convex and where tape would crumple. It pays to mask in sections, let each color set and only then stick the next template on, so that a fresh film does not tear. Once the mask is off, go over the crossing of the rivet lines with a light overspray, so that the edge does not read like a stuck-on strip.
This is a masking add-on, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
