Pre-cut masking templates from the SX-Art brand for a model of the Bf 109F-4 aircraft in 1:48 from the maker ICM. The set is cut to the shapes of a particular kit, so when painting you have nothing to trace or cut out. It is not a kit of the aircraft; the model itself has to be had.
The Bf 109F-4 is a single-engined, single-seat fighter with a liquid-cooled V12 engine. Against the older versions it has rounded wingtips, a cleaner shape to the forward fuselage and tail surfaces with no struts. The cockpit is narrow, with flat glazing panels and fairly thick frames, and it is those that masking concerns most.
The finishes of fighters in this category rest on a combination of two things: a relatively sharp demarcation on the upper surfaces and irregular mottling on the sides of the fuselage and on the vertical tail. A template solves the first part, that is the division of the upper surfaces and the boundary with the light underside, which has to lie at the same height on both sides of the model. Mottling cannot be done with a template and should not be; that is work for an airbrush with a fine nozzle, heavily thinned paint and low pressure, applied in layers. A sensible approach is therefore to spray the base fields by the templates first, let them set, and only then add the blotches and transitions freehand. On the cockpit frames, by contrast, you need a sharp edge with no run; press the mask down firmly there and spray perpendicular to the edge.
