An add-on to a model, not a kit in its own right: a turned metal barrel in 1:35 from the Polish maker Aber, made to go in place of the plastic part on a 2S23 model. A caliber of 120 mm makes the barrel a short but thick cylinder, on which every departure from a circle is apparent at first glance — and that is exactly the weakness of injection-molded plastic, where a seam along the whole length is left by the mold parting line. A turned part has a smooth jacket with no seam and a drilled muzzle.
The 2S23 Nona-SVK is a self-propelled gun-mortar of Russian design built on a wheeled armored chassis derived from the BTR-80 carrier. It carries the 120 mm 2A60 weapon in a rotating turret; that weapon combines the qualities of a mortar and a gun, so it can deliver both high-angle and direct fire. A wheeled chassis gives the machine a higher road speed and a lower weight than a tracked solution in the same class.
Cut the plastic barrel off with a saw and open the hole in the turret out with a drill so that the metal sits on the axis — on a short thick barrel, being off the axis paradoxically shows more than on a long gun. Glue with gel cyanoacrylate glue. Before painting, degrease the metal with alcohol and apply a primer made for metal, or the paint will rub off a turned surface. The painting itself matches the rest of the vehicle; it is a good idea to darken the muzzle slightly and lighten the edges, so that the cylindrical shape stands out. On wheeled equipment, dust and deposits on the wheels and the underside of the body make up the largest part of the final impression.
The part is meant for modifying an existing kit. The vehicle, paints and glue are not included in the package.
