1:35 KV-1 mantlet with the ZiS-5 gun is a turned barrel with the gun mantlet of the turret for a model of the Soviet heavy tank KV-1 in 1:35 from the maker PANZER ART. An add-on to a plastic kit, not a model in its own right.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set replaces the barrel of the gun and the mantlet of the turret around it on a KV-1 kit. The turned barrel has an accurate round cross section, a smooth surface and an open muzzle, which with a plastic part is achieved only by laborious drilling and sanding of the mold seam line down. The mantlet meanwhile settles the character of the front of the turret, so replacing both parts visibly raises the level of the model. This is not a tank kit; the model is bought separately.
The 76.2 mm ZiS-5 gun replaced the older L-11 and F-32 types on the KV-1 and accompanied the tank through its later production batches. The change to the new gun showed in the shape of the turret mantlet as well, which had to match a different mounting of the weapon. For a modeler that means that the right combination of turret, mantlet and barrel is the quickest way to assign a model to a particular production stage.
Cut the original mantlet from the kit off with a saw and level the mating surface, so that the new part lies against it without gaps. Wash the resin in warm water with dish soap and degrease the metal with alcohol. Glue with super glue; the gel kind gives you time to line the axis of the barrel up. Apply a primer before painting, or the shade will not stay on smooth metal. Leave the muzzle of the barrel matte black, bring the edges of the mantlet out with a dry brush and dust the lower part with pigments.
The add-on is supplied unpainted and without a base kit. Glue, paints and the model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
