About product

PANZER ART 1:35 sandbags for the Sherman with the composite hull

A set of cast improvised sandbag armor for the American M4 Sherman medium tank with the composite hull, in 1:35 scale. The parts are shaped to particular areas of this hull version, which matters: on the Sherman the shape of the front differs with the production variant and a general set would not fit here.

The real subject

The composite hull of the Sherman joined a cast front section to a welded remainder. It came about as a production compromise and you recognize it by the characteristic seam between the two parts. Crews added sandbags, timber and spare track links to the front of the hull, because they feared a hit into the ammunition stowage.

Building and painting tips

Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and try the fit dry. Bond with super glue and fill the seam against the armor, so that the bags run into the hull. Paint the canvas flat, vary the shades slightly and apply a dark wash into the folds. Dry brush the raised edges.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of American armor in 1:35 scale
  • Owners of Sherman models with the composite hull
  • Modelers who build vehicles with improvised protection
  • Those who do not want to model bags from putty
  • More experienced builders used to cast parts

The set is an accessory to a kit and does not replace the kit. Paints, glue and the model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

It need not. On the Sherman the shape of the front differs with the variant, and the set is shaped for the composite hull.

Flat, with the shades varied slightly, and with a dark wash applied into the folds.
