About product

SMS Derfflinger 1917 in 1:700 scale, full hull with metal barrels

A plastic kit of the German battlecruiser Derfflinger in her 1917 state from the maker Takom. This form is offered as full hull, that is with the complete hull including the underwater part, and according to the name it also holds metal barrels for the main armament. Turned metal barrels have a more accurate and deeper muzzle than plastic ones and need no sanding of a parting line, which makes them a practical accessory above all in such a small scale. The 1:700 scale is the most widespread one for warships and keeps the model to a reasonable size even for a ship more than two hundred meters long.

The real subject

The Derfflinger was the first German battlecruiser with 305 millimeter guns arranged in four twin turrets on the centerline of the ship. She entered service shortly after the outbreak of the First World War and was among the best protected ships of her class. She took part in the action at Dogger Bank in 1915 and in the battle of Jutland in 1916, where she helped sink two British battlecruisers and herself took more than twenty hits by heavy shells, yet managed to return to port. The year 1917 captures the ship in her late configuration after repairs and changes to the armament. After the armistice the Derfflinger was interned at Scapa Flow and in June 1919 she was scuttled by her own crew.

Building and painting tips

Fit the metal barrels only once the turrets are painted, as otherwise the metal is needlessly filled with paint; use super glue to hold them. Glue the hull on a flat base and check whether it has twisted. German ships of the period carried fairly uniform gray paint, so the final impression rests on shading the faces and on a fine lift of the panels and rivets. Photo-etched railings and ship ladders show a great deal on a ship with such a clean silhouette. Spray the underwater part separately and mask the waterline with tape.

Who the model is for

  • anyone interested in the German fleet of the First World War
  • modelers who collect ships in a single 1:700 scale
  • builders who will appreciate metal barrels instead of plastic ones
  • collectors who prefer a full hull form for a display case

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

This form has a complete hull including the underwater part and is displayed on a stand. The waterline version is cut down to the waterline and suits a diorama with a water surface.

Turned metal barrels have an accurate, drilled muzzle, have no parting line and need no sanding. In a small scale it is one of the most visible details.

It is the period designation of the ships of the Imperial German Navy, the counterpart of the British HMS. It is used as part of the name of a ship.

All that is certain from the name is the full hull form and the presence of metal barrels. Check the number of parts on the box of the kit.
