About product

French concrete road signs 1:35 — a MiniArt diorama set

This set from the manufacturer MiniArt is a scenic accessory in 1:35 scale, which represents French concrete road signs from the period of the years 1930 to 1940 with a link to Normandy. It is not a kit of a vehicle but an element of the setting. It is precisely such small things that determine where and when a scene takes place: a concrete signpost by a field track sets a diorama in a particular landscape more convincingly than any caption on a base.

Placement in the scene

The signs belong at the edge of the road or at a crossroads, slightly off the axis and never perfectly upright — period road furniture tends to be leaning and knocked about. Lay them out dry together with a vehicle and figures and watch that they do not cover the main motif. Sink the foot of a sign into terrain material that is still damp and mask the transition to the ground with dust, fine gravel or tufts of grass, otherwise the joint will be visible.

Painting, layering and finishing

First clean the parts up, remove the casting remains and glue them, according to the material used, with cyanoacrylate glue or with cement for polystyrene. Concrete is never painted in one gray shade: lay a light base on, work irregular patches of warmer and cooler tones into it and even the area out with heavily thinned paint. Once dry, a running wash comes, which pulls out the edges, cracks and knocked-about places. Bring out the lettering and the letters with a fine brush and pull any excess off at once with a damp brush, before the paint dries. A dry brush in a lighter shade will bring the modeling back to the edges. Do green coatings, moss and deposits of soil from the bottom upward with decreasing intensity. Even everything out at the end with matte varnish — concrete must not be shiny anywhere — and only then add dry dust pigments on the matte surface.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of dioramas from the fighting in Normandy in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who want to anchor a scene in time and place
  • Anyone interested in period road furniture and the French landscape
  • Modelers practicing the painting of concrete, moss and weathered surfaces

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue, a base and figures are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a scenic accessory. The set represents road signs, which are added to a diorama alongside finished models and figures, and it does not make up a model of equipment in its own right.

Check the number of pieces and the exact make-up on the packaging of the product.

Avoid a single shade. Complete a light base with irregular warmer and cooler patches, even them out with thinned paint, bring out the cracks with a wash and take the sheen off the surface. Concrete must not be shiny anywhere.
