Thanks to the larger scale, the 1:10 Bird Watcher bust is rewarding for detailed painting and is among the more prominent pieces in a cabinet.
Responsibility details are not available.
The difference between a tenth and a twelfth looks slight on paper, but on a shelf it shows. The piece grows by roughly a fifth, and with it every area that gets painted. For anyone just getting to know busts that is an advantage: a broader face and larger areas of clothing forgive an imprecise brush.
The name points to a civilian, calm scene, not to a combat one. Such subjects rest on small everyday details: on a wrinkle, on an expression of concentration, on the ordinary fabric of an outer garment. That is exactly why they tend to be refreshing in a collection among war and fantasy motifs, and they are appreciated at shows too, where they stand out from the row.
In a larger scale the texture of materials comes out, so it pays to set smooth skin apart from textile and from any accessories. You will imitate wool or tweed with light mottling in two close shades, whereas the skin should be kept as smooth as possible. Build the transitions up patiently from heavily thinned paint; in a large format jumps between tones are mercilessly visible.
A taller format also deserves a sturdier base, so that the composition does not look unsteady.
